CERN physicists briefly transmute lead into gold

bgr.com

Physicists at CERN have successfully transmuted lead into gold, achieving a modern-day form of alchemy. This was accomplished by manipulating lead atoms within the Large Hadron Collider. The scientists accelerated lead nuclei to near light speed, causing them to shed protons when their intense electric fields interacted. This process, when precisely three protons were lost, transformed the lead into gold atoms. While the experiment produced approximately 89,000 gold nuclei per second, the gold is short-lived and in minuscule quantities, making it impractical for any commercial use. The gold quickly reverts back to lead.
