The central government has denied ownership rights to residents of Chandigarh's rehabilitation colonies. Allottees were informed that homes were provided on a rental basis, with no provision for ownership rights. This clarification followed a question from city MP Manish Tewari in Parliament. He inquired about any surveys regarding ownership rights for these houses. Union minister Nityanand Rai confirmed that the houses were allotted to economically weaker sections on a monthly fee basis. He also stated that there are 34,965 such houses built since 1980.
