Capitals first NHL team to clinch playoff spot
The Washington Capitals have become the first team in the NHL to secure a playoff spot this season. They clinched their place after winning their 69th game. Last season, they were the last team to make the playoffs. Alex Ovechkin scored his 888th career goal in a 3-2 victory against the Philadelphia Flyers. He noted the importance of gathering points early in the season. “It’s hard,” he said, emphasizing that every game gets tougher as teams fight for their playoff positions. The Capitals have maintained a strong roster, with key players like Ovechkin, Tom Wilson, and John Carlson still on the team. They also made several successful offseason signings, including Pierre-Luc Dubois and Andrew Mangiapane. The Capitals lead the NHL with 100 points and hold a 13-point advantage in the Eastern Conference. Mangiapane praised the team's depth and strong performance throughout the year. With the team seven years removed from their first Stanley Cup win, Ovechkin and some teammates from that championship squad remain. Injuries have sidelined some players, but their positive influence is still felt. Nicklas Backstrom remarked on the team's calmness and cohesiveness, adding that they are looking strong heading into the playoffs.
