Cancer becomes top cause of death in Mizoram as cases rise
Cancer is now the leading cause of death in Mizoram, mainly due to high tobacco use and lifestyle choices. From 2018 to 2023, 6,745 cancer-related deaths were reported, with approximately 1,300 deaths in 2023 alone. The Mizoram State Cancer Institute recorded 11,569 cancer cases during the same period, with 2,100 new cases in 2023. This marks an increase from previous years, highlighting a growing trend in cancer diagnoses. Despite the rise in cases, advancements in treatment have improved patient survival rates. The institute has upgraded its facilities significantly, including a recent enhancement funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency.
