Canadian diplomat warns New Yorkers of rising energy costs from potential Trump tariffs
A Canadian diplomat warned that tariffs on Canadian goods could raise energy costs for New Yorkers. Tom Clark, the consul general in New York, met with state lawmakers amid a potential trade war following President Trump's recent tariff orders. Trump's tariffs include a 25% duty on imports from Canada and Mexico, with a lower 10% on Canadian energy. Although tariffs are currently paused, Clark noted that New Yorkers rely heavily on Canadian energy, importing over $2 billion annually. Clark emphasized that tariffs could impact both fossil fuel and green energy prices. He mentioned the importance of the upcoming Champlain-Hudson Power Express project, which will supply hydropower to New York City starting in 2026.
