Caltech physicists confirm quantum energy ladder predicted 40 years ago
Caltech physicists have experimentally observed quantum energy patterns predicted 40 years ago, using laser-trapped atoms to recreate two quantum tipping points and confirm exact energy ratios from theory. The breakthrough validates longstanding predictions and opens new avenues for exploring unknown quantum systems. Published in Nature, the experiments used quantum simulators to directly measure energy levels predicted by the Ising and tricritical Ising conformal field theories. Researchers arranged strontium atoms in chains up to 35 atoms long, excited them to Rydberg states, and used a technique called many body modulation spectroscopy to detect the predicted energy ladder. The team now plans to expand experiments to two-dimensional atomic grids, where conformal field theories are less understood. This could enable investigation of quantum systems too complex for classical computers, as the technique does not require knowing the answer in advance.
