British alt-pop star Self Esteem, also known as Rebecca Lucy Taylor, is preparing for the release of her third album, "A Complicated Woman," out on April 25. After her breakthrough album, "Prioritise Pleasure," Taylor has been reflecting on her journey in the music industry. She experienced a major moment of inspiration while performing in front of 90,000 fans at Wembley Stadium, where she realized her desire to create music that resonates with diverse audiences, especially women and the LGBTQ+ community. With her new album, Taylor aims to expand her sound and themes. The lead single, "Focus Is Power," features a gospel choir and explores motivational themes, while another track, "69," has humorous references to sexuality. Taylor describes her music as “not background music,” noting it requires deep listening and connection. She also addresses her past struggles with misogyny in the music industry and her evolution from indie band member to solo artist. Despite her growing success, Taylor has faced the pressures of performing and recording. After a demanding year following "Prioritise Pleasure," she found some peace working in theater, including composing for and performing in a production of "Cabaret." This experience taught her the value of balance and collaboration in her career. As she prepares for "A Complicated Woman," which includes a theatrical run in mid-April, Taylor reflects on the challenges of crossing over into the American market. She acknowledges the differences in her appeal between the UK and the US but remains focused on her own artistic journey. Taylor embraces her ambition while also practicing self-acceptance, stating that she doesn't need constant validation. She asserts that, regardless of her album's reception, she will continue creating art and enjoying her life.
