Brazilian teacher jailed for racist slur against Black student

A private school teacher in Maceió, Alagoas, was sentenced to seven years and three months in prison for racial insult and corruption of minors after comparing a 13-year-old Black student to a chimpanzee during class. The Alagoas Public Ministry announced the ruling on Wednesday, September 2. The teacher must also pay R$15,000 in damages to the victim. The incident occurred on February 12, when the teacher pointed at the student after being asked who resembled an animal on a notebook cover. Witnessing students confirmed the act, which left the boy distressed and subject to ongoing mockery. The teacher admitted the action but denied racism. The school removed him, and the student only returned to class after learning of his dismissal.
