Brazilian patient plays guitar and sings Legião Urbana during brain surgery in Marília
A 51-year-old Brazilian engineering supervisor played guitar and sang a Legião Urbana song during awake brain surgery to remove a tumor in Marília, São Paulo, allowing doctors to monitor his neurological functions in real time. Neurosurgeon Ruy Okaji said the team, which has used awake craniotomy for over 20 years, incorporated the patient's musical hobby into testing protocols. Fábio Aparecido Pereira dos Reis performed language, reading, math, memory, and singing tests while surgeons mapped his brain to remove the tumor with minimal risk of sequelae. Reis was diagnosed with an aggressive glioma on September 2 and operated on September 8. He completed five chemotherapy sessions and is preparing for radiotherapy. His wife said the 12-hour surgery was successful, and he left awake and talking.
