Brazil police accuse Jair Bolsonaro and 36 others of coup attempt after 2022 election loss
Brazil's federal police have formally accused former president Jair Bolsonaro and 36 others of attempting a coup to overturn the 2022 election results. This follows a nearly two-year investigation into the election-denying movement and riots by his supporters in January 2023. The police report, filed with the Supreme Court, includes allegations that Bolsonaro was aware of a plot to assassinate his rival, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. Five suspects were arrested in connection with this plot, including a former deputy minister from Bolsonaro's cabinet. The prosecutor-general will now decide whether to press charges against Bolsonaro and the others for attempting to violently disrupt Brazil's democratic order. Bolsonaro has denied the accusations and criticized the investigation.
