Border fencing work in West Bengal's Malda halted due to Bangladesh objections
Fencing work near the Bangladesh border in Malda, West Bengal, is currently suspended due to objections from the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB). This halt follows a period of construction that began in April 2024 and was previously conducted with mutual consent. The suspension started in November 2024 after BGB raised concerns. A recent sector commandant-level meeting between BGB and India's Border Security Force (BSF) took place on January 18, 2025, to discuss the situation informally. Upcoming DG-level talks may address the issue further. The fencing is being constructed within 150 yards of the border, which requires prior agreement between both countries.
