Bonobos can engage in pretend play, demonstrating imaginative capabilities previously thought exclusive to humans. A bonobo named Kanzi showed he could voluntarily perceive objects as something else, challenging human uniqueness in imagination. Studies with Kanzi, who died last year, suggest a shorter distance between human and animal mental lives than previously believed.
