Bombay High Court questions Maratha community's backwardness for reservation in Maharashtra

The Bombay High Court is examining if the politically dominant Maratha community can be considered backward for reservation purposes. The court questions whether Marathas, who have held significant political power in Maharashtra, are "out of the mainstream of national life," a key factor for breaching the 50 percent reservation cap. The state argues individual success doesn't define community backwardness. Previous Maratha reservation laws were struck down by the Supreme Court, which deemed the community dominant and in the mainstream. The current law grants 10 percent reservation.
