BMW will revive range-extender tech for global electric SUVs

autos.yahoo.com

BMW will reintroduce range-extender (REx) technology, starting with the sixth-generation X5 in 2026, to boost electric SUV appeal globally, particularly in China. The REx drivetrain, developed with ZF, aims to provide over 600 miles of electric range, addressing charging infrastructure limitations. This decision follows strong sales of REx models, and the technology may also be offered in the X3 and X7. BMW previously offered REx in the i3, but discontinued it in 2018. The new REx system will leverage experience from the iX5 Hydrogen program and is influenced by the success of Chinese automaker Li Auto.
