Bloomfield, New Jersey mandates gender-neutral signs for single-occupancy restrooms

Bloomfield, New Jersey has passed a law requiring all single-occupancy public restrooms to display gender-neutral signage, replacing "men's" and "women's" labels, with violators facing fines up to $2,000. The ordinance, unanimously approved by the Township Council on July 13, gives existing businesses 180 days to comply. Acceptable signs include "restroom," "all-gender restroom," or universal symbols, though no new bathrooms must be built. Violators receive a written warning and 30 days to correct the issue before fines apply. Council member Tracy Toler-Phillips called the measure a "historic win," as Bloomfield joins nearby towns like Montclair and Maplewood. Waivers are available if compliance conflicts with state plumbing codes or federal laws.
