Bishop criticizes poor state of Maharlika Highway in Quezon province
Bishop Eugenius Cañete criticized the government for the poor state of Maharlika Highway, calling it the worst in the Calabarzon region. He noted ongoing complaints about damaged roads, heavy traffic, and accidents, highlighting ineffective temporary repairs. District engineer Rodel Florido acknowledged the issues but disputed claims about budget constraints. He stated that while maintenance funds exist, they are insufficient for comprehensive repairs. His office has requested additional funds for 2025. Quezon Governor Angelina Tan supported the bishop's concerns, stating that about 70% of the highway needs urgent repairs. The DPWH attributed the highway's deterioration to heavy rainfall since November.
