Billie Jean King Criticizes Federer Over Gender Equality Efforts

Billie Jean King has sharply criticized Roger Federer, urging the Swiss tennis legend to do more for gender equality in the sport. The 82-year-old made the remarks during Federer's Hall of Fame induction weekend in Newport. King pointed to Federer's family, noting he has two daughters and two sons, saying she repeatedly tells him the household is evenly split. She believes he could have used his immense popularity to push harder for equal prize money, adding he seems unwilling to challenge the status quo. Federer has previously stated he supports equal prize money but considers each tournament's history and economic structure. In 2019, he said his efforts to raise ATP prize money ultimately benefit women's tennis, though additional WTA support would be desirable.
