Berlin couple faces trial for systematic bronze statue theft from cemeteries and parks

A trial begins today in Berlin against a couple accused of systematically stealing bronze statues from cemeteries and parks. The 68-year-old man and his 63-year-old wife allegedly stole or received stolen art objects in 39 cases between 2021 and 2025. A 56-year-old is also charged with receiving stolen goods. The stolen items include around 40 bronze statues and relief plates, primarily from Berlin cemeteries, but also from other German states. Prosecutors seek to confiscate hundreds of thousands of euros in proceeds.
