Vester was born in North Carolina and raised in Virginia. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II and later earned a degree in electrical engineering. He worked on significant projects, including the BOMARC radar and Project Gemini. After retiring in 1984, Vester enjoyed sailing and maintained a radio antenna at his home. He was married for 61 years to Christine Capehart Vester, who died in 2021. He is survived by three children, eight grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
