Belgian PM urges zero tariffs to boost India-EU trade

Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever urged further cuts in import duties between India and the European Union, including potential zero tariffs, to boost bilateral trade, particularly in the diamond sector. He spoke at the Bharat Diamond Bourse in Mumbai on Friday. De Wever noted the landmark free trade agreement reached in January this year, which is expected to be signed by year-end and implemented next year. He expressed support for discussions on lowering or eliminating tariffs, emphasizing Belgium's openness for business and diamonds. The India-Belgium gems and jewellery trade was around USD 3.5 billion in 2025-26, with many Indian diamantaires based in Antwerp. Industry leaders highlighted the sector's support for over five million jobs across India.
