Beatrice Chebet sets new women's 5,000m world record in Barcelona

Kenyan runner Beatrice Chebet set a new women’s 5,000m road world record on January 1, 2025, clocking 13:54 at the Cursa dels Nassos race in Barcelona. This time breaks her previous record of 14:13, established at the same event in 2023. Chebet is the first woman to run the distance in under 14 minutes on any surface. She finished 14th overall in the race, competing alongside male athletes. This achievement follows her successful year, where she won two Olympic gold medals and set the 10,000m world record in May 2024. Her new record is pending ratification.
