Beachgoers urged to stay safe with first aid tips and awareness of hazards

As summer approaches, beachgoers are reminded to be aware of potential dangers, including sunburn, heat exposure, and injuries. In the summer of 2023-24, Surf Life Saving Australia reported over 49,000 first aid treatments at beaches across the country. Common hazards include sun exposure, rips, and injuries from surfboards or beach umbrellas. Nearly half of coastal drowning deaths in 2023-24 occurred at the beach, with many linked to unpatrolled areas. To stay safe, a well-stocked first aid kit is essential. Key items include bandages, gloves, scissors, and a CPR shield. For remote beaches, additional supplies like saline solution and insect repellent are recommended.
