Dering recognized the bag from surveillance footage and reported it on December 5. Following the arrest of suspect Luigi Mangione on December 9, Dering received threats and accusations of being a "snitch." Critics on social media claimed he used the bag's serial number to inform police, which Dering called misinformation. Dering emphasized that Peak Design does not share customer information with authorities unless legally required. He stated that the company values customer privacy and only associates serial numbers with registered products.
