B-1 Lancer receives rapid upgrades to enhance capabilities into the 2040s
The B-1 Lancer is undergoing significant upgrades through the BEAST program, which aims to enhance its capabilities and keep it operational until the 2040s. The upgrades are being completed more quickly than usual, averaging 22 days per aircraft. The modernization includes new systems for identification, communication, and avionics, allowing pilots to focus more on combat operations. The B-1, which has been in service since 1986, is expected to retire by the mid-2030s as the B-21 Raider enters service. Additionally, the Air Force is exploring the B-1 as a potential platform for testing hypersonic weapons. However, some of its external hardpoints are currently inoperative due to treaty obligations.
