Australia's three-fanged death adder has enhanced venom potency

In the past, death adder bites had a 50% mortality rate before antivenom was developed. The venom contains neurotoxins that can affect the nervous system quickly. Collett thinks that this three-fanged snake could be the deadliest death adder due to its higher venom output. Recent tests show that it produces about twice the venom compared to normal death adders, though scientists are still unsure if the extra fang is responsible for this increase or if the snake is naturally more venomous. Death adders regularly replace lost fangs, but the emergence of a third fang is unusual and not fully understood. While other three-fanged snakes have been discovered in Australia, no three-fanged death adders had been seen until now.
