Australia's sound archive adds iconic beer ad and Doctor Who theme to 2024 collection
The National Film and Sound Archive of Australia has added ten iconic sounds to its 2024 Sounds of Australia collection. This includes the famous Victoria Bitter beer advertisement featuring John Meillon and the original Doctor Who theme music, created by Australian Ron Grainer. The VB ad, known for its catchy tagline, has been a part of Australian culture since 1967. The Doctor Who theme, recognized as one of the first electronic television themes, was developed by Grainer with contributions from Delia Derbyshire and Brian Hodgson. Other notable additions include recordings by Jimmie Barker, who documented First Nations culture, and Nova Peris's 2013 parliamentary speech advocating for Indigenous rights. The list also honors Tina Arena's hit "Chains" and includes the extinct Pipistrelle microbat's last recorded sounds.
