Australian Man’s Toothache Leads to Sepsis and Open-Heart Surgery

A 35-year-old Australian man is warning others after a toothache escalated into sepsis and a life-threatening heart infection requiring open-heart surgery. Luke Woodhouse developed a fever, chills, and chest tightness within days of the initial pain. Woodhouse was diagnosed with infective endocarditis, an infection of the heart’s inner lining, after doctors found his blood was infected. The infection destroyed one of his heart valves, which was replaced with a mechanical one during emergency surgery at The Prince Charles Hospital in Brisbane. A year after the operation, Woodhouse is raising awareness about sepsis, urging people not to ignore symptoms like fever, rapid heartbeat, or shallow breathing. He says he will need lifelong monitoring of his mechanical heart valve but is grateful for his recovery.
