Australians will consume up to 75,000 tonnes of mangoes this summer, with popular varieties like Kensington Pride and R2E2 originating from Bowen, Queensland. The Kensington Pride, developed in the 1880s, is the most popular Australian mango, known for its unique sweet and tangy flavor due to alpha-terpinolene. The R2E2, a larger, firmer variety with a similar flavor, was developed later and is the top export. Other notable Queensland varieties include the delicate Calypso and the rich, golden Honey Gold. Mangoes are best enjoyed cool, but refrigeration should be limited to avoid bruising.
