A new vaccine for the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is now free for pregnant women in Australia, following a $174.5 million government investment. Previously, the vaccine cost $300 per pregnancy. The vaccine, Abrysvo, helps protect infants by allowing mothers to pass antibodies through the placenta. RSV is the leading cause of hospitalizations for children under five in Australia. Eligible women can receive the vaccine for free between 28 and 36 weeks of pregnancy. Other RSV treatments will be available for infants born after the vaccination period, starting April 1, 2025.
