Australia joins US and Canada in sanctioning Sudan's rival military leaders
Australia has joined the US and Canada in imposing asset freezes and travel bans on Sudan's rival military leaders, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, following over three and a half years of war and billions in humanitarian aid. The sanctions, announced November 5, 2026, target four individuals and one armed group for serious human rights abuses, including attacks on civilians, torture, and extrajudicial killings. Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong cited Canberra's Magnitsky-style framework, barring financial dealings with those implicated in violations. The measures also target West Darfur's governor and an RSF commander, plus the Al-Baraa Bin Malik Brigade. Sudan's civil war, ongoing since April 2023, has killed hundreds of thousands and displaced over 14 million, with nearly 34 million needing aid despite an estimated US$6.23 billion in humanitarian funding received between 2023 and November 2026.
