Auchan transfers French supermarkets to Intermarché

Auchan is exiting its French supermarket operations, transferring its approximately 300 stores. This move follows years of financial difficulties for the retailer. Intermarché has been actively acquiring stores, taking over nearly 300 Casino locations and 81 Colruyt stores. Auchan recently sold 19 stores to Lidl, some of which were previously acquired from Casino. Auchan also announced a social plan for nearly 2,400 job cuts, which was invalidated by a court but is under appeal. A broader partnership between Auchan and Intermarché, including a ten-year purchasing alliance, was initiated in 2024.
