Astronomers observe two giant gas planets forming around a young star

Astronomers have directly observed two giant gas planets forming around a young star, offering a rare glimpse into planetary system birth. The discovery around star WISPIT 2, made with the Very Large Telescope, shows a structured disk with gaps carved by the emerging planets, providing a unique laboratory for studying system formation. This system is only the second known where two planets are directly observed forming, and scientists suspect a third planet may also be present.
