Astronomers Find Most Distant Galaxy Supercluster Progenitor

An international team of astronomers has discovered the most distant progenitor to a galaxy supercluster ever found, a structure named COSMOS-z3.1-A observed when the Universe was only 2.1 billion years old. This finding supports existing theories of galaxy cluster evolution and their connection to the cosmic web. The study, led by Vandana Ramakrishnan and published in The Astrophysical Journal, used data from the ODIN survey and 3D mapping with spectrographs like DESI. The team identified 150 distant protoclusters and determined that COSMOS-z3.1-A, with a mass 5000 times that of the Milky Way, will evolve into a structure more massive than the Coma Cluster. The detailed 3D maps reveal these ancient protoclusters are clumpy and lie at intersections of cosmic web filaments, providing direct evidence of "bottom-up" structure formation. The research suggests such extreme objects are rarer than one per 10,000 galaxy clusters, with future discoveries expected from the Vera C. Rubin Observatory's Legacy Survey of Space and Time.
