Asteroid the size of Empire State Building to pass Earth safely on December 4

An asteroid named 2020 XR, about the size of the Empire State Building, will safely pass Earth on December 4, 2024. It will come within 1.4 million miles, significantly farther than the moon. 2020 XR was discovered in 2020 and is classified as a "potentially hazardous object" due to its size and proximity. It was previously assessed to have a small chance of impacting Earth in 2028. The Virtual Telescope Project will livestream the asteroid's close approach on December 3, 2024. This event marks the 11th anniversary of its discovery.
