Asteroid impact risk significantly reduced to nearly zero
Astronomers have revised the risk of asteroid 2024 YR4 hitting Earth, lowering it from 3 percent to nearly zero. New observations from the European Southern Observatory and other facilities provided a clearer trajectory for the asteroid, which is set to pass close to Earth in 2032. NASA now estimates the impact probability at 0.004 percent, while the European Space Agency reports it at 0.001 percent. The asteroid, discovered in December, is 40 to 90 meters wide and has been monitored due to its potential threat. While the risk of a collision is low, an impact could still cause significant damage. An asteroid of this size could release energy equivalent to 500 Hiroshima bombs, but most energy would likely dissipate in the atmosphere.
