Arizona telescope photographs Mars rising over the Moon

A new image shows Mars emerging from behind the Moon, captured by a telescope in Arizona. The rare celestial event was photographed on January 13. The image was taken by the Shreve Telescope at the Kitt Peak National Observatory, part of NSF NOIRLab. The event occurred during a lunar occultation, when the Moon passed in front of Mars, making the planet appear to disappear and then reappear. The observatory, located near Tucson, Arizona, offers public access to telescopes and hosts tours. The image was taken by visitor center guides using public-access equipment.
