Amsterdam court hears case against TikTok-famous chip shop
Amsterdam residents have taken the city to court over a TikTok-viral chip shop, Fabel Friet, claiming crowds are clogging their exclusive canal neighbourhood and attracting litter, gulls and rats. The case centres on the business licence for the small takeaway. Nineteen neighbours formally protested the licence, citing the "TikTok queue" causing street congestion and nuisance. The city council acknowledged the mayor can refuse licences if the living environment is harmed, while the shop's owners say they employ cleaners four times daily and visitor numbers have dropped 23% this August. The dispute highlights broader tensions over "viral urbanism" and tourism's impact on public space. A court verdict is expected on 12 November, with residents hoping the business location will be closed.
