Amazon, Not Google, Is Microsoft's Real Cloud Rival
Microsoft has begun disclosing standalone Azure quarterly revenue, revealing its cloud business is far closer to Google Cloud than to Amazon Web Services, with the gap to AWS nearly three times Azure's lead over Google. This reframes Amazon as Microsoft's primary competitive threat for investors. AWS reported $42.23 billion in quarterly revenue with 36.7% year-over-year growth, its fastest in 18 quarters, while Google Cloud posted $24.77 billion with 82% growth. Azure crossed $100 billion in full-year revenue with 43% Q4 growth, though Microsoft's reporting reshuffle moved some GitHub sales into another segment, complicating growth comparisons. OpenAI has committed 2 gigawatts of AWS capacity starting 2027, and Anthropic secured 5 gigawatts of Trainium chips, challenging Azure's captive AI workload position. Microsoft's overall quarterly outlook remained unchanged despite the reorganization, which shifts revenue between lines without altering the underlying business.
