Amazon launches satellites, challenging SpaceX's Starlink
pbs.org —
Amazon has launched its first internet satellites, entering the market dominated by SpaceX's Starlink constellation, aiming to provide global broadband. The launch, using a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket, sent 27 Project Kuiper satellites into orbit, with plans for over 3,200 total. These satellites are designed to compete with SpaceX's existing network of over 8,000 Starlinks. Astronomers have expressed concerns about the growing number of satellites, fearing interference with observations and potential collisions. Amazon's launch follows two test satellites launched in 2023.
