Alsace property tax rises in 20% of municipalities

In Alsace, 177 of 880 municipalities, or 20%, have increased their property tax on built land, a rate slightly above the national average of 15%. Most increases are modest, ranging between 1% and 3%, though some municipalities have voted for hikes exceeding 20%, while a very few have decreased their rates. The new rates were set by either previous or newly elected municipal councils. The increases are largely justified by budget constraints, including reduced state funding and rising costs. Property tax remains one of the few fiscal tools available to local governments, alongside taxes on undeveloped land and secondary residences.
