Akkulam Lake to Get Major Cleanup in Thiruvananthapuram

The District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) is preparing a comprehensive plan to clean the Akkulam Lake in Thiruvananthapuram, with an estimated cost of around 25 crore rupees. The project aims to fully remove accumulated waste, water hyacinth, and silt from the Veli-Akkulam lake. The plan includes preventing waste inflow from the Amayizhanjan canal and cleaning city drains that pollute the lake. The DPR will be submitted to the central tourism department, with implementation through state agencies. Water hyacinth may be converted into fertilizer or value-added products. The project also includes beautification efforts like cycling paths, landscaping, and lighting around the lake. Officials say boat services could resume after cleaning, and the plan aims to protect biodiversity. A previous KIFBI-funded attempt was stalled due to financial issues.
