AI video falsely depicts SpaceX Moon strike; South Korean orbiter captures real impact

A fake video purporting to show a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket stage striking the Moon circulated online after the real impact occurred on August 5, 2026. The Falcon 9 upper stage, launched in January 2025, hit the Moon as predicted. The European Southern Observatory detected sodium and lithium in the impact plume, and South Korea’s Danuri orbiter imaged surface changes. Musk and @Valuetainment later admitted the clip was AI-generated. The upper stage helped propel two lunar landers before its orbit decayed. Experts say such artificial impacts are rare, but growing orbital debris raises concerns about cascading collisions known as Kessler syndrome.
