AI models from Google, OpenAI won math competition gold
Google and OpenAI's AI models have each won gold medals at the International Mathematical Olympiad, marking a significant advancement in AI's mathematical abilities. This achievement signals a major step forward in the development of AI systems capable of complex reasoning. The AI models solved five out of six problems using general-purpose reasoning models that processed mathematical concepts through natural language. This marks the first time AI systems have surpassed the gold-medal threshold in the competition, surpassing previous AI approaches. The competition involved 630 students, with 67 achieving gold medal scores. The results suggest AI could soon assist mathematicians in solving unsolved research problems.
