African Development Bank program boosts fisheries and economy in 16 Southern African countries

An African Development Bank-funded fisheries program has positively impacted nearly three million people across 16 Southern African countries, boosting fish production, consumption, and incomes. The PROFISHBLUE initiative has generated over 500,000 tonnes in cross-border fish trade, enhancing food security and employment. It has also provided training and resources to over 250,000 beneficiaries in seven countries. Launched in 2022 with a $9.2 million grant, the program focuses on improving fisheries governance and establishing sustainable blue economy trade corridors, with support from partners like the FAO and UNIDO.
