Adam Schiff to be sworn in as California's next senator on Monday
Adam B. Schiff will be sworn in as California's next U.S. senator on Monday, replacing Laphonza Butler, who was appointed to fill the seat after Dianne Feinstein's death in September 2023. Schiff was elected last month to complete Feinstein's term and serve a full six-year term. Schiff, a Democrat and former House member, defeated rivals Katie Porter and Barbara Lee in the primary and won against Republican Steve Garvey in the general election. His swearing-in marks the first time since 1993 that California will not have a female senator. Schiff will join Alex Padilla as California's junior senator. He plans to focus on economic issues like housing and child care. Schiff and fellow senator-elect Andy Kim will gain some seniority by serving out the remainder of their predecessors' terms before a Republican majority takes over in January.
