Over 100 obstacles, including buildings and towers, are present in the approach funnel of Thiruvananthapuram airport, according to new data released by the Airports Authority of India (AAI). This poses a potential safety risk during emergencies. The obstacles, which include trees and water tanks, could hinder aircraft maneuverability during events like engine failure. While not typically affecting normal operations, they reduce runway length and necessitate careful navigation. Sixteen obstacles have already been removed. The AAI provides this data to pilots and controllers for safe take-offs and landings. Experts emphasize the need for frequent terrain mapping and obstacle removal to enhance air safety, especially given the recent Ahmedabad air crash.
