97-year-old Nepali woman survives four hours trapped after Himalayan flood

A 97-year-old woman, Guna Maya Bohara, survived four hours trapped under rubble after catastrophic floods struck an elderly care home in Devighat, Nuwakot, on August 26. She is now being treated for acute stress disorder at Bir Hospital in Kathmandu. The floods were triggered by a glacier collapse in the Himalayas, sending debris down the Trishuli River. Rescuers, including police and army personnel, carefully cleared rubble for hours before Bohara's relatives used a JCB excavator to lift her to safety. Bohara, who has outlived her husband by 81 years and raised 25 nieces and nephews, repeatedly asks, "Why did the water hit me?" despite explanations that a lake burst upstream.
