75 Cats Rescued From Tiny Paris Apartment, Dead Kittens Found in Freezer

Animal welfare group YouCare rescued 75 cats from a 50-square-meter apartment in Paris' 15th arrondissement, where they lived in squalid conditions. Dead kittens were found in a freezer. The rescue followed the tenant's eviction from the social housing unit, with neighbors having complained about the urine smell. The unsterilized cats produced frequent litters, with YouCare estimating dozens of kittens died monthly; only four survived. Forty-five cats have been rescued since September 10, with the rest fed daily by volunteers due to lack of space. A fundraising campaign met its 21,000 euro target for treatment costs. The tenant, suspected of animal hoarding syndrome, denies abuse and wants the cats returned.
