12 Jobs Projected to Decline by 2035 as Automation Bites

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that 12 occupations will see employment declines from 2025 to 2035, primarily due to automation. Word processors and typists are expected to face the steepest drop, with a predicted 34% decrease in jobs. Most of the shrinking occupations are not high-paying, with many falling below the 2025 national median wage of $50,980. Declines are attributed to factors like 3D printing replacing patternmakers, AI and machine learning replacing typing tasks, and shifts in marketing methods or mining operations. Overall U.S. employment is forecast to grow 3.5% over the decade, down from 10.9% in the previous period. However, the healthcare and social assistance sector is expected to add 37% of the projected 5.9 million new jobs, driven by an aging population.
