Vancouver man convicted of manslaughter in Starbucks stabbing death

A man was convicted of manslaughter, not murder, in the stabbing death of a father outside a Vancouver Starbucks. Inderdeep Singh Gosal was acquitted of second-degree murder in the March 2023 killing of Paul Schmidt. The judge-alone trial heard Gosal, who has schizophrenia, argued the attack was an overreaction due to mental illness, not deliberate intent to kill. Crown prosecutors countered that Gosal knew his actions could cause death, citing inconsistencies in his accounts. Gosal had stopped taking medication months before the attack and believed a knife was a sign from God. The stabbing, captured on video, followed a verbal confrontation near the coffee shop entrance.
